BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), will run an editorial on Tuesday, forecasting the year 2008.
The editorial said 2008 will be a year when the world pays more attention to China and will be written into the country's history.
In 2008, Beijing will host the 29th Summer Olympic Games and Paralympics. "We will show to the world 5,000 years of splendid Chinese history, the significant achievements of modern China and the zeitgeist of the Chinese people," it said.
The year 2008 also marks the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. "The CPC and Chinese people will definitely push forward the great course of reform and opening up and build China a wealthy, democratic, civilized and harmonious socialist modernized country," it said.
In his New Year address on Monday, Chinese president Hu Jintao said the drive of reform and opening up is a crucial option that determines the fate of contemporary China and has brought historic changes to socialist China.
In the end, the editorial called on the Chinese people to forge ahead in joint efforts to make new achievements in 2008.
