New Year's road accident death toll rises to 188 across Thailand

    BANGKOK, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from road accidents in the first three days of the so-called seven dangerous days of New Year break rose to 188, the Road Safety Center of Thailand announced Monday.

    Chaisawt Kittipornpaibool, permanent secretary for Transport, said a total of 1,965 road accidents occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, seeing 188 people killed and 2,131 others injured.

    The number of accidents was 47, or 2.45 per cent higher than that of last year and the death toll was 9, or 5.03 per cent higher than that from the same period of last year.

    Drunk driving remained the biggest cause of the accident while motorcycles involved in most of the accidents.

    Last year, more than 5,000 road accidents were monitored across the country. The death toll was at 480 and the number of injured victims was at 4,900 during the period.
