A contestant flounders in mud during the Maldon Mud Race at Maldon in Essex, southeast England, Dec. 30, 2007. During the race, participants have to dash across the muddy banks of the River Blackwater to one of the mudbanks in the channel and back to raise money for charity. The competition originated in 1973 after a local publican was challenged to serve a meal on a mudbank.
