MOSUL, Iraq, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Turkish warplanes
struck Kurdish rebel targets in the Kurdish province of Duhuk in northern Iraq
on Tuesday, a Kurdish security source said.
"The Turkish warplanes bombed three villages in the
region of Amadiyah near the Iraqi-Turkish border at about 12:15 p.m. (0915
GMT)," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attacks caused no casualties as the villages were
deserted after they were evacuated several weeks ago for their safety, he said.
The Turkish military has launched several
cross-border attacks recently in a bid to fight separatist Kurdish Workers'
Party (PKK) rebels, who use northern Iraq as a launch pad for attacks against
Turkey.
Last week, Turkish warplanes carried out air strikes
at some villages near the border in the Qandil mountains, killing at least five
PKK members and one woman, and wounding six people, according to a Kurdish
security source.
Security operations are underway in southeastern and
eastern Turkey as 100,000 Turkish troops have massed along the borders with Iraq
in preparations for possible cross-border operations to crush the about
3,000-strong PKK rebels.
The PKK, listed by the United States and Turkey as a
terrorist group, took up arms against Turkey in 1984 with the aim of creating an
ethnic homeland in the southeast. More than 30,000 people have been killed in
the over-two-decade conflict.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush called Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday amid Turkey's military strikes
against the bases of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
"The president and the prime minister exchanged greetings
and best wishes for the New Year," U.S. National Security Council spokesman
Gordon Johndroe said. Full story
