JAKARTA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A small passenger boat with 14 people onboard sank off Indonesia's Riau province, leaving 11 passengers missing and two others dead, local press said Tuesday.

The boat's captain was the sole survivor, said leading news website Detikcom.

The accident occurred in the busy waterway Malacca Strait Monday when giant waves struck the boat whose most passengers were women and children.

The boat then slammed into wooden pillars planted by local fishermen to install their nets before it capsized and sank, local police officer Agus Sarjito was quoted as saying.

"The captain managed to climb the pillars and held on until a fishing boat came by and rescued him," he said.

Two bodies have been recovered from the site.
