LIMA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Peru will send 205 soldiers to rotate its contingent of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), officials said on Wednesday.
The new contingent will be led by Lt. Col. Fernando Vera. Peruvian Defense Minister Allan Wagner and armed forces joint command chief Admiral Jorge Montoya will attend a send-off for the fresh troops on Thursday.
The contingent will be stationed at the Chavin base in the Shodecosa Industrial park in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, one of the most volatile areas in the island country.
Haiti fell into chaos in 2004 after former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide's government collapsed. Since then, a 7,800-member UN force has been tasked with providing security for the violence-wracked nation of about 8.7 million people.
