    SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on Wednesday issued a message congratulating Lee Myung-bak of the conservative main opposition Grand National Party on his election as South Korea's 17th president.

    "We deliver words of congratulations to Lee Myung-bak. We also send words of consolation to the defeated candidates. We respect the will of the people displayed in the presidential election," said a message issued in the name of Roh's spokesperson, Cheon Ho-seon.

    "The presidential office evaluates the fact that the presidential election was conducted fairly. The Participatory Government will faithfully try to hand over the administration to the next president. We will also try our best the last moment to take care of state affairs," said the message.

Major competitors of Lee Myung-bak admit failure in S.Korean presidential elections

    SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Major competitors of Lee Myung-bak of the conservative Grand National Party admitted on Wednesday their failures in South Korean presidential elections.

    Presidential candidate Chung Dong-young of the pro-government United New Democratic Party (UNDP) said he accepted the failure in the presidential race and will abide by the people's choice of president-elect Lee Myung-bak. Full story

    SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The presidential polls throughout South Korea closed at 6 p.m. (0900 GMT) Wednesday.

    The election watchdog said that as of 5 p.m. (0800 GMT) 57.6 percent of 37.65 million eligible voters cast their ballots at 13,178 polling stations nationwide from 6 a.m. (2100 GMT Tuesday) to 6 p.m.  Full story

    SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Lee Myung-bak of the conservative Grand National Party (GNP) was advanced in the presidential election, an exit poll by the KBS broadcast showed on Wednesday.

    According to the exit poll, 50.3 percent of the respondents gave their ballots to Lee Myung-bak on Wednesday's election. Full story

S Korean presidential election kicked off nationwide

    SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The presidential elections was kicked off in South Korea nationwide at 6 a.m. Wednesday (2100 GMT Tuesday).

    A total of 13,178 polling stations nationwide will be opened to 37.65 million eligible voters from 6 a.m. (2100 GMT Tuesday) to 6 p.m. (0900 GMT Wednesday) Wednesday, according to the National Election Commission (NEC). Full story

Campaign for presidential election launched in S Korea 

    SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Presidential candidates in South Korea formally launched on Tuesday their campaigns for the Dec. 19 presidential election.

    According to the National Election Commission (NEC), 12 candidates registered with the NEC during the two-day registration period ending on Monday, making the candidate number the highest record in history.  Full story
