NEW YORK, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Juan Sebastian Veron has performed a U-turn on a reported deal to join DC United in Major League Soccer.

After speaking with his teammates, Veron chose to remain in Argentina. "I'm staying because of the fans and my teammates. The truth is that I couldn't say goodbye."

"My teammates' request for me to stay was very important. And I couldn't ignore the fans' affection." He added.

Veron admitted he had been very tempted by the offer to join MLS. "It was a lot of money; maybe I would advise a kid to go. But in a situation like mine it is better to live for the things that give you happiness."

Veron, the 32-year-old midfielder, was an Italian champion and UEFA Cup winner with Lazio during the best spell of his career. At that time, he was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.
