MOSCOW, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Russia on Friday expressed its firm opposition to Taiwan's proposed referendum on U.N. membership, vowing to work along with international community to curb the "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities.

    "It's another step of the 'Taiwan independence' activities for the Taiwan authority, led by Chen Shui-bian, to speed up promotion for the referendum on U.N. membership," Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov told Chinese Ambassador to Russia Liu Guchang.

    Such a move is a "dangerous political game" and will pose vital threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and in the Asian-Pacific region at large, he said in a meeting with Liu in Moscow.

    Russia holds a constant and clear stance on the Taiwan issue, he said, noting that Russia regards the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of China.

    "Russia is firmly opposed to Taiwan's accession to any international organizations which is composed of sovereignty nations and firmly opposed to Taiwan's proposed UN membership in any name," he said.

    Many other countries, such as the United States, have also expressed their opposition and concern over the proposed referendum.

    The United States opposes the referendum and believes it showed the Taiwan authorities' intention to change the status quo, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas J. Christensen has said.
