Special report: Tension escalates in
Baghdad, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The
U.S. military said on Thursday that its troops killed three suspected insurgents
and detained 18 others in operations against al-Qaida network across Iraq.
In an operation northwest of Khalis town, some 60 km
northeast of Baghdad, U.S. troops captured a wanted man believed to be involved
in car bomb attacks, the military said in a statement.
During the operation, the troops killed an armed man
and detained five others, including the wanted individual, in the targeted area,
the statement said.
In a separate operation, the troops captured two
suspected al-Qaida militants in the Yousifiyah area, 30 km south of Baghdad, it
One of the detainees "reportedly has ties to foreign
terrorists and senior al-Qaida leaders operating in the Arab Jabour and southern
Baghdad area," the statement said.
In north of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, the
U.S. troops killed two suspects and detained six others during an operation
targeting an alleged al-Qaida leader who reportedly "commands numerous
terrorists, whom he uses to conduct assassinations targeting Iraqi security
In another operation, the troops detained five
suspected terrorists north of Beiji, 200 km north of Baghdad, during an
operation targeting al-Qaida member in Iraq believed to be involved in "weapons
and foreign terrorist facilitation," it added.
