Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier was killed by insurgents' small arms fire in Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

    The soldier, assigned to Multi-National Division - Baghdad, was killed in western Baghdad on Wednesday, a military statement said.

    The deceased soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, it added.

    The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to about 3,880 since the outbreak of the Iraq war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
