BANGKOK, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Election Commission (EC) of Thailand has
found evidence of a political party which bought votes in a northern province,
local media reported on Sunday.
More than 200 voters have received the money for voting for the party
during the general election on Dec. 23, Commissioner Sumet Ubanisakorn was
quoted by local news network The Nation as saying.
He said it was informed by a non-governmental organization involved in poll
monitoring that a party remitted money to voters using money orders. Each voter
received between 1,000 baht (about 30 U.S. dollars) and 2,000 baht (about 60
U.S. dollars) and nearly200 voters had withdrawn money from post offices.
However, the commissioner disclosed neither the party name nor the province
name.
He said documentary evidence was clear but the commission was waiting for
witnesses to identify candidates who bought votes.
Sumet said the party can be dissolved if found guilty.
"We plan to handle this case before election day to show that the
commission is serious about enforcing the law," Sumet said.
