JAKARTA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia will not join other countries in imposing sanctions on Yangon in connection with the political and human rights situation in Myanmar.
"Indonesia will prefer giving constructive inputs rather than imposing sanctions," Antara news agency quoted the president as talking to Indonesian journalists in Singapore on Thursday.
Yudhoyono, who just attended the ASEAN summit meeting, said theMyanmar problem was one of the issues discussed in depth by ASEAN leaders during the summit.
ASEAN leaders (excepting Myanmar Prime Minister Thein Sein) had at a working dinner even agreed to support transformation and democratization in Myanmar without sacrificing Myanmar people, he said.
He said Indonesia's stand on Myanmar was quite clear because itknew what the latter was facing.
Indonesia had historical ties with Myanmar which were established in the 1940s when the former was struggling for independence, he said.
The political turmoil happening in Myanmar were once also experienced by Indonesia, he said.
The Indonesian stand was the same as that of ASEAN which calls for dialogues between the military junta and detained opposition leader Aun San Suu Kyi, he said.
According to ASEAN and the world's geopolitics, he said, the Myanmar problem must be resolved through cooperation with the UN and intensive dialogs between ASEAN and Myanmar.
