ISLAMABAD, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Over 100 people have been killed and around 230 others injured as the result of four days of sectarian clashes in Pakistan's northwestern tribal area by Monday, local TV channels reported.
At least eight people were killed and 17 others injured when two missiles landed at a bazaar in Kurram tribal agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on Monday, local TV channel reports said.
In another development, some 18 people were injured as two mortars landed at a vegetable market of Sadda town, 30 km from Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency, as troops took full control of the area to quell sectarian violence, according to the local Aaj TV channel.
Violence erupted between Sunnis and Shiites on Friday after unidentified persons attacked the people coming out of a mosque in Parachinar, injuring two persons.
The authorities have imposed curfew in Parachinar and closed all routes to the city. All educational institutions have been closed in the area.
Security forces have been deployed in the area and taken control of the city. The army helicopters hit bunkers of the opposing sides from where they were firing rocket and mortar shells at each other's positions.
Locals said that clashes spread to small villages such as Balish Khel, Sangeena and Pewarad Aryni in Kurram Agency as the army had been concentrating on Parachinar.
The local administration has failed to secure a cease-fire through talks. A jirga or council of tribal elders is set to move to Parachinar for talks with the rivals to broker a cease-fire.
Kurram Agency has seen sectarian violence in April this year which killed 84 people and injured scores of others.
