KUNMING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow 40 centimeters deep has blocked
roads and cut off the power supply to a southwest China county popular with
tourists, local authorities said Friday.
More than 80 tourists have been trapped in the Deqin County of Diqing
Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, which is currently "almost
isolated" from the outside world, said a spokesman with the general office of
the county government.
These tourists mainly came from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong Province, and
Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province. Local tourism authorities have provided
them with sufficient food and clothing, said a local tourism official.
The snowfall, which has also triggered landslides, started at 6:00 p.m. on
Wednesday and continued right through to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, he said.
No casualties have been reported.
Local authorities have mobilized people to clear away the snow on several
major highways and the government is investigating any losses incurred, he said.
Electricity company workers are working to repair the damaged power
facilities.
"In some areas, high voltage power lines have broken under the weight of
the snow," he added.
