MOSCOW, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The last train carrying military hardware and property of the 12th Russian military base in Batumi has come to Russia from Georgia, Assistant Army Commander Col. Igor Konashenkov said on Friday.
"This train ended the withdrawal of armaments, military hardware and property of Russian bases in Georgia to the Russian territory," Konashenkov was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
"The train passed through Georgia and Azerbaijan in strict compliance with the schedule," the colonel said. "The train delivered 12 vehicles and about 55 tonnes of property from Batumi."
All in all, over 500 tonnes of military hardware and about 2,000 tonnes of military property were brought from Georgia to Russia by railroad this year, he said.
The last train carrying property to Russia's 102nd military base in the Armenian city of Gyumri will depart from the 12th base in Batumi in the middle of November, Konashenkov said.
"The Russian servicemen will soon start the transfer of the 12th base infrastructure to the Georgian Defense Ministry," he said.
Army Commander Gen. Alexei Maslov said earlier that Russia would complete the withdrawal of its last base in Georgia by the end of 2007, ahead of schedule. It was planned initially to withdraw the base through 2008.
Russia inherited four military bases in Georgia from the former Soviet Union and has withdrawn from three of them. Under Russian-Georgian agreements, Russia will complete its withdrawal operations in Batumi before October 2008.
