SANTIAGO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua)-- The leaders of Chile, Spain and the United Nations met here Thursday and agreed to work together to promote global development.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon were attending the High Level Round Table for a Development Alliance, part of the Ibero-American Summit, where they exchanged ideas on how to achieve a more equal and fair world.

The three reiterated the need to create the global development agenda, in which the UN would coordinate the multilateral efforts.

Ban called for an emergent action to fight global warming, saying "clearly, we are facing an emergency."

"We must be actively engaged in confronting the global challenge of climate change, which is a serious threat to development everywhere," he said.

Ban said fighting global warming was one of his priorities as the UN chief and called on the developing countries to "continue to create a favorable environment for long-term and equitable economic growth."

He also called for more efforts to fight against poverty and hunger. "Today, almost one billion people on our planet still live on less than one (U.S.) dollar a day. Millions of children die every year before reaching their fifth birthday from causes associated with malnutrition. Malaria, AIDS and other infectious diseases are taking their toll on countries that can least afford it," he said.

Ban will travel to Antarctica Friday to see the effects of global warming on glaciers.

The round table was coordinated by the UN Economic Commission of Latin America and Caribbean. The organization's executive secretary Jose Luis Machinea said "global problems require global solutions, (and) the UN constitutes the best place to think and seek these type of solutions."
