GAZA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Lawmakers of Islamic Hamas movement recommended on Wednesday in a session held in Gaza to fire Salam Fayyad, prime minister of the caretaker government in the West Bank, from the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC).
A pure Hamas lawmaker session of the PLC was held on the phone in both Gaza and the West Bank, where the legal quorum of 70 was met through authorizations given by 35 Hamas lawmakers jailed in Israel.
Acting Speaker of the PLC, Ahmed Bahar, told Hamas lawmakers at the opening of the session that all the presidential decrees issued by President Mahmoud Abbas in the wake of Hamas' control of Gaza are abolished.
"The Legislative Council considers all the decrees issued by President Mahmoud Abbas after Hamas takeover in Gaza are annulled since they were not approved by the council," said Bahar.
However, the PLC session on Wednesday was boycotted by the lawmakers of Fatah bloc in the parliament as well as other left-wing and independent parties, who considered it as "illegal and contradicts with the Palestinian basic law."
Following Hamas' takeover of Gaza, Abbas decreed to depose Prime Minister Ismail Haneya and his national unity government ledby Hamas, which was formed following the power-sharing Mecca deal reached in February.
Abbas also outlawed the executive force of Hamas, defined now by Hamas as the Palestinian police forces. The force along with Hamas armed wing defeated Abbas' security forces and took control of Gaza forcibly in mid June.
Enraged by the Gaza "coup," defined by President Abbas, economist Salam Fayyad was appointed by Abbas to form a caretaker government in the West Bank.
However, the caretaker government was not recognized by the Hamas-led government in Gaza for lack of the PLC's approval.
To defend the legitimacy of the caretaker government, President Abbas said that the PLC was not able to legally convene after Israel detained about 40 lawmakers, most of them Hamas lawmakers.
Those lawmakers, including PLC Speaker Aziz Dweik, were detained in June 2006 after the capture of Israeli corporal Gilad Shalit in southern Gaza in a cross-border raid by Hamas armed wingand two other minor militant groups.
There are altogether 132 members in the PLC, with 74 and 43 from Hamas and Fatah respectively. However, among the 74 Hamas lawmakers, around 35 are in Israeli jails.
Hamas decided to hold the session after it came up with the idea of taking authorization from each jailed parliament member affiliated with Hamas in Israeli jails. Twenty-nine Hamas parliament members attended the session in Gaza and six in the West Bank.
Due to the Israeli closure imposed on the Palestinian territories and the isolation of Gaza from the West Bank, PLC sessions were usually held through video conference system.
