BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- More than 60
percent of the people downloading Radiohead's latest album did not pay a cent
for it, an Internet research company said Monday.
The British band ended its recording contract with EMI Group Ltd
and last month released their new recording "In Rainbows" online, allowing
buyers to choose their price or pay nothing.
At the time, the decision was hailed by some as a
potentially revolutionary strategy to combat declining sales in the face of
widespread illegal downloading.
However, Comscore Inc. said some 62 percent of the
1.2 million people who have downloaded "In Rainbows" from Oct. 10 to Oct. 29
worldwide opted not to pay the band. The remaining 38 percent voluntarily paid
an average of six dollars.
According to Comscore, American music-lovers were the
most generous, paying on average 8.05 dollars. Outside the United States, the
average amount parted with was 4.64 dollars.
Comscore collated the figures from data gathered from
a few hundred people who are part of its database of two million computer users
worldwide who give the firm permission to monitor their behavior.
