MOSCOW, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Russia called on Lebanese political leaders to reach accord on the country's upcoming presidential elections, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said on Tuesday.
"Being adherent to the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Lebanon, we call on all the political leaders to realize their historic responsibility and do their best to reach accord," Kamynin was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as commenting on presidential elections in Lebanon.
"We are confident that the Lebanese can do that. It is the most important to elect the president in strict compliance with the Lebanese constitution and laws, without any external interference," he said.
Kamynin said that there is still chance for the Lebanese political leaders to find a compromise through dialog and bear in mind the interests of all the political and religious forces.
He said that Russia will continue to promote stability in Lebanon and the entire region.
Lebanon has been in political impasse since six ministers quit the cabinet last November as a result of power struggle between rival parliament majority and opposition blocs.
The vote to elect a successor to Lahoud has been called off twice due to a lack of consensus between the different political camps.
The forecast presidential event caused widespread concern among the Lebanese, fearing further disarrays and possible eruption of violence.
