10 convicted terrorists begin hunger strike in Spain

    MADRID, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ten of the 21 criminals convicted for the train bombings on March 11, 2004 in Madrid began a hunger strike to protest the court's sentence, Spanish penitentiary institutions reported Friday.

    The 10 convicted protesters began the hunger strike Thursday and are only drinking liquids, said Spanish penitentiary officials.

    The two Moroccan convicts, Jamal Zougam and Otman el Ganoui, imprisoned in Alicante and sentenced to 43,000 years in jail, are among the 11 convicts that announced their hunger strike, the officials added.

    The rest of the convicts received sentences of between 12 and 18 years for belonging to the terrorist group.

    The March 11 terrorist attacks killed 191 people and left more than 1,800 people injured.

    MADRID, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Wednesday that the harsh sentences dictated on Wednesday for the March 11 of 2004 terrorist attacks have made justice and established "the truth of the facts."

    Zapatero recalled the victims on behalf of all Spaniards and expressed his closeness with the families that lost one of their loved ones that day. Full story

Spain arrests six for backing alleged terrorist groups 

    MADRID, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Six people have been arrested in Spain for allegedly providing support and helping to train fighters for terrorist groups in Iraq and elsewhere, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday in a statement.

    The Civil Guard searched six houses in the northern Burgos province and found documents and computers used by the suspect, it said, adding that this is the first time Spain has shut down an internet-based terrorist operation.Full story
