HONG KONG, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- A report tells that body fatness appears to be one of the main causes of cancer, according to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) that made the report public here on Thursday.
The report, published by WCRF and American Institute for Cancer Research, involves 21 international experts' recommendations on how to reduce the risk of cancer, tells that excess fat encourages the body to produce substances called growth hormones which is linked to greater chance of cancer. People are, therefore, suggested to keep as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight.
Limit consumption of red meat such as lamb, pork and beef and to avoid processed meats such as sausages and ham in one's diet are also recommended as they both contain substances leading to development of cancer. One should eat less that 500 grams of red meat per weak to reduce the risk of cancer.
The report also found strong evidence that high-dose of supplements of some nutrients might upset the balance of nutrients in the body which in turn affect the risk of different cancers. Experts reminded people of not using supplements to protect against cancer and that the best source of nourishment is a balanced diet of food and drinks.
Furthermore, breast-feeding is one of the ways to help women reduce the chance of having breast cancer as it lowers the levels of some cancer-related hormones in the mother's body.
Also suggested in the report include getting rid of tobacco, reducing the consumption of alcoholic and being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day.
