BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- An Iraqi fisherman was fishing with his son in the Euphrates river last week, when they found something rare and large in their net: a two-meter shark.

"I recognized the fish as a shark because I have seen one on a television program," media reports Tuesday quoted Karim Hasan Thamir as saying.

The 110kg white shark was caught near the village of Al-Fidhaliyah, close to the city of Nasiriyah and more than 200 km from the sea.

The fisherman had delivered the shark to his college as there was nothing he could do with it, according to Doctor Nazah Rasool, dean of the College of Science in Nasiriyah.

"It is the first time that we have found a shark in the river," he said. "It is rare."

Dr. Mohamed Ajah, assistant dean of the college of science at Thi Qar University in Nassiriya, said barriers in river estuaries usually prevented sharks swimming upstream.

"In this case, I think this animal was there for a long time but no one had managed to see it," he said.
