BRASILIA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Brazil expects to invest 1.1 billion U.S. dollars to remodel and build stadiums, as well as for the improvement of infrastructure for the 2014 World Cup soccer finals.
On Tuesday in a ceremony at Zurich, Switzerland, the
world soccer ruling body FIFA granted the host right to Brazil.
However, private sector differs widely from the
government, expecting the investment to reach some 10 billion dollars.
The Brazilian project includes the construction of
four stadiums in the cities of Recife, Salvador, Maceio and Natal, all in
northeast Brazil, besides restoring and expansion of 14 existing stadiums.
Brazil was a sole candidate to host this event since
Colombia withdrew its candidacy in April. According to the rotation to hold this
soccer event it was South America's turn to host this event.
Brazil has won the World Cup five times and hosted
this event in 1950 losing 2-1 against Uruguay in the final.
FIFA's decision on Tuesday makes Brazil the second
Latin American country to host the World Cup twice. Mexico hosted this event in
1970 and 1986.
