Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. military said Thursday that two of its soldiers were killed and eight others injured in two incidents in Baghdad northern province of Salahudin on Wednesday.

A soldier was killed and five others were wounded during combat operations near the city of Beiji, 200 km north of Baghdad, a military statement said.

    A second soldier died of wounds sustained from a mine explosion while conducting operations in the province, another statement said.

    Three more soldiers were also wounded by the blast, it added. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the statements said.

    The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to 3,837 since the U.S.-led invasion on Iraq in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
