MEXICO CITY, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The smoke from wildfires in southern California caused classes to be suspended Monday in the northern Mexico cities of Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito, in the state of Baja California, an official source said.

Baja California's Police advised inhabitants of the region bordering the United States to avoid going out of their homes except in an emergency due to the harmful effects of the smoke.

Since the weekend the smoke from many Californian grass and forest fires has filled Mexican skies with harmful heavy smoke.

The Police of Tijuana, near San Diego, California, said they remain on alert in that zone due to the fire's proximity to Tecate(Mexico)-Tecatito (U.S.).

The police added that the fire is not expected to cross into Mexican territory since the winds are blowing in other directions.

The strong winds lashing southern California on Monday sent the fires affecting Malibu out of control, where many Hollywood celebrities have their residences.

Hundreds of thousands of people fled as out-of-control wildfires raged across California on Monday, threatening homes and stretching emergency services to breaking point.
