BEIJING, Oct.11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland official lashed out on Thursday at Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's new "Taiwan independence" remarks made on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council accused Chen of continuing to whip up support for his secessionist policy such as the "referendum" plan on the island's entry into the United Nations.

"Chen's scheme of 'Taiwan independence' is doomed to fail," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the mainland will remain committed to pushing cross-Strait relations toward peace and stability, but will never allow any people to separate Taiwan from the motherland in any manner.
