LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Disney's family comedy "The Game Plan" remained on top of box office in U.S. and Canada theaters for the second weekend as DreamWorks' romantic comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" debuted with disappointing performance.

According to preliminary box office results released Sunday, last week's box office leader "The Game Plan" took in 16.3 million dollars over the three-day period, when "The Heartbreak Kid," starring popular comedian Ben Stiller, debuted with 14 million dollars as it has been getting less-than-rave reviews.

The Disney film has earned about 42.8 million dollars in ticket sales in North America after two weekends in release.

Universal's geopolitical thriller "The Kingdom" slipped one slot to third with about 9.3 million dollars, while Sony's sci-fi thriller "Resident Evil: Extinction," came in fourth place with 4.3 million dollars.

"The seeker: The Dark Is Rising," a 20th Century Fox adaptation of the second novel in Susan Cooper's award-winning fantasy series about a modern day kid traveling through time to seek clues against dark forces, was in fifth with a gross of some 3.8 million dollars in its debuting weekend.

Taiwan-born director Ang Lee's World War II spy thriller "Lust,Caution" jumped from No. 49 to No. 26 with 369,000 dollars this weekend as the film expanded to 17 theaters. It showed only in one New York theater last weekend.

The Chinese-language film has grossed 477,000 dollars in North America since it began limited release last week, while the film's worldwide gross has reached 5.3 million dollars.

The top-selling 12 films in North America took in a collective 65.7 million dollars this weekend, a 35 percent decline from the same weekend last year, as Hollywood saw the third-straight down weekend in its backyard.
