3,200 trapped in South Africa gold mine

South Africa miners, who was trapped underground, emerge from Harmony Gold's Elandsrand mine near Carletonville, about 110 km west to Johannesburg, South Africa, on Oct. 4, 2007. A total of 3200 workers were trapped about 2200 meters underground on Wednesday, after a pipe fell into the lift shaft and cut off the power supply to the lift normally used to hoist workers out of the mine. Harmony Gold said about 750 miners had been rescued by 7 am (0500 GTM) on Thursday.
