JAKARTA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with magnitude of 6.5 hit western part of Indonesia on Wednesday with no tsunami warning, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.
The quake struck at 22:43 Jakarta time (1543 GMT) with epicentre at 149 kilometres of southwest Painan town of West Sumatra province and at 70 kilometres under sea bed, an official of the agency named Ali Imron told Xinhua.
The quake intensity was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (modified mercally intensity), a scale which is enable to crack buildings, at Padang city, the capital of the province, 3 MMI at Pariaman town of the province and 2 to 3 MMI at Muko-Muko town of neighbouring Bengkulu province, he said.
Indonesia is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
