    BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Jelena Jankovic, world number 3 of Serbia, downed former world number 1 Lindsay Davenport of the United States 6-3, 7-5 to reach the final of the China Open tennis tournament here on Saturday.

    The American broke her opponent's service at the very beginning, but the Serbian second seed did not lose her rhythm. After an early trade of breaks, the two leveled the scores as 2-2 and Jankovic even pulled away with breaks in the sixth and eighth games for a 5-3 lead and won the first set 6-3 with a splendid ace.

    The American veteran quickly took a 3-1 lead in set two. But Jankovic successfully broke Davenport's service in the fifth game and saved herself's in the sixth. After another exchange of breaks, the two leveled the scores to 5-5. The second seed regained the momentum at last and beat Davenport 7-5.

    Jankovic will face the winner of Chinese Peng Shuai and Agnes Szavay of Hungury in the final held on Sunday.

Jankovic plays Davenport at semifinal of China Open

    BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The second seed Jelena Jankovic won the quarterfinal by beating Japanese Akiko Morigami 6-3, 7-5 at the 600,000-U.S.-dollar China Open here on Friday.

    After losing her service in the first game, Jankovic began to control the rhythm of the first set. The burgeoning Serbian grabbed breaks in the fourth and sixth games and sealed the set 6-3. Full story

Davenport reaches semifinals at China Open

    BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- American veteran Lindsay Davenport entered the semifinals by breezily beating Russian Elena Dementieva 7-6, 6-1 at the China Open tennis tournament quarter finals here on Friday.

    Dementieva, ranked 15th in the world, tried her best in the first set but still lost to the American veteran in the tiebreak. Full story
