SHENYANG, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland shows utmost sincerity to promote cross-Straits relations but is also ready to stop any dangerous "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities, said a mainland official here Friday.

    "We will keep a close eye on the development of the 'referendumon Taiwan joining the United Nations' and well prepare for any serious circumstance," said Wang Fuqing, vice-director with the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at the receiving ceremony to a group of Taiwan businessmen who paid visit to northeast China's Liaoning Province.

    As Chinese President Hu Jintao said when meeting Taiwan businessmen in April 2006, peace and development shall be the maintheme of cross-Straits relations and the goal shared by people from both sides, Wang said.

    "But we are very sorry to see that the Taiwan authorities headed by Chen Shui-bian have carried on a series of secessionist activities and made provocations openly, ignoring the real need ofTaiwan people and objections from the international community," hesaid.

    The Taiwan authorities sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in July, raising an application to join the United Nations in the name of "Taiwan".

    Meanwhile, Chen has been pushing for a plan to hold a "referendum" in Taiwan on its entry to the United Nations.

    "Driven by interests of his own party and himself, Chen has risked the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits as well as the interests of Taiwan people," Wang said.

    The mainland has kept its words to maintain the peace and stability across the Straits and foster the relations between the two sides with persistent efforts, he said. "We will never allow anyone to make Taiwan secede from China in any manner."

    "We hope everyone to recognize the motive behind what Chen has done and dangerous effect of his secessionist activities. People from the two sides of the Straits shall join hands in standing against 'Taiwan Independence' and promote peace and development," he said.
