BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The second seed Jelena Jankovic won the quarterfinal by beating Japanese Akiko Morigami 6-3, 7-5 at the 600,000-US-dollar China Open here on Friday.

After losing her service in the first game, Jankovic began to control the rhythm of the first set. The burgeoning Serbian grabbed breaks in the fourth and sixth games and sealed the set 6-3.

In the second set, both players plunged into trouble in saving their services. Morigami managed to grab four breaks, but only hold her first service. Jankovic won the set in 7-5.

"Morigami is a very good player. She really gave me some difficult time in the second set. I am glad to win the match although it was a tough one," said Jankovic after the match.

In the semifinal, Jankovic, highest-ranked seed after Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova quitting on Wednesday, will meet American comeback mum Lindsay Davenport, who beat Elena Dementieva 7-6, 6-1in another quarter final.

Talking about the coming semifinal, the Serbian was quite confident.

"No matter who is standing at the other side of the court, I will try to win the match," said Jankovic.

Jankovic has enjoyed a magnificent season to date, securing four titles, including the Tier I events in Charleston and Rome, and rising to a career-high ranking of world No. 3.

"My ultimate goal is to be the world No. 1. Now my ranking is very close, but I still have a long way to go. I need to work hard and I hope I can make it one day," said Jankovic.
