DAMASCUS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A Syrian official on Wednesday denied U.S. media reports that Israeli warplanes intruded Syrian airspace last week and attacked weapons for the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement inside the Syrian territories.
The official, who declined to name himself, made the denial in an interview with the Lebanese Manar television station.
The U.S. media reports were not correct, which aimed at diverting the public attention to the Israeli invasion against a sovereign state, the official said.
According to the CNN television network, Israeli aircraft carried out an airstrike inside Syria last week, possibly targeting weapons that were destined for Hezbollah militants in a move to warn Syria against supporting Hezbollah.
The report said the strike targeted "weapons that were either coming into Syria, or that were being transshipped from Iran, through Syria, to Hezbollah.
Syria's official media had reported that Syrian defense forces opened fire on Israeli aircraft after they flew over northern Syria and dropped ammunition on Sept. 6, saying no damage or casualty was caused in the incident.
As Israel was remaining silent on the alleged attack, Syria's UN ambassador Bashar Ja'afari has complained to the United Nations on the Israeli violation of its airspace, sending letters to UN chief Ban Ki-moon and France's UN ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert, the UN Security Council's current president.
