Vietnam's hi-tech market surges

    HANOI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's retail market for hi-tech products has annually increased 27 percent on average in recent years, according to local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times on Tuesday.

    Specifically, mobile phone and laptop markets have annually grown 40 percent and 100 percent, said the newspaper.

    In 2007, the local retail market for hi-tech goods is estimated at three billion U.S. dollars.

    Vietnam is expected to have 36 million mobile phone subscribers by 2010, up from some 28.7 million by the end of June 2007, according to the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication Group.

    The country with a population of some 84 million has set targets of having 32-42 fixed and mobile phones, 10 personal computers, and 8-12 Internet subscribers for every 100 residents by 2010.
