UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council approved in principle on Monday the proposed establishment of a multidimensional presence in eastern Chad and the northeastern Central African Republic (CAR).

In a presidential statement read out by Ambassador Pascal Gayama of the Republic of Congo, the rotating council president, the council took notes of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's observations and proposals "relating to military elements of the multidimensional presence."

It also expressed its readiness to authorize the establishment of a multidimensional presence in that region, and encouraged the UN chief and the European Union to proceed with preparations for this multidimensional presence "as appropriate and in consultation with the governments of Chad and the CAR."

Ban proposed on Aug. 16 a revised concept of operations with a joint UN-EU force for the troubled east of Chad and northeast of the CAR.
