Panel formed to nationalize Nepali late king's property

    KATHMANDU, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Nepali government Monday formed a five-member committee led by Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula to nationalize the property of late King Birendra.

    A cabinet meeting held on Monday at the official residence of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at Baluwatar, Kathmandu, has inducted the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation, Minister for Physical Planning and Works and Minister for Law, Justice and the Parliamentary Affairs as the members of the committee.

    The cabinet asked the committee to fulfill the responsibility within 15 days, Minister Giriraj Mani Pokhrel for Health and Population told reporters after the meeting.

    Nepali government will also set up a trust to take care of the nationalized property and the land registered in the name of the late King Birendra and his family members.

    A proclamation of then house of representatives had directed Nepali government to nationalize the property of the late King Birendra back in 2006.

    King Birendra and Queen Aiswarya on June 1, 2001 were reported to be shot dead by Crown Prince Dipendra along with around a dozen other members of the royal family at the Narayanhity Royal Palace in Kathmandu. Dipendra also shot himself dead.
