    BANGKOK, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China started to show their stamina by clinching five gold medals on Thursday, catching up with the gold tally leader Russia with 27 when the World University Games approached to the end.

    On the third day from the closing ceremony, China eventually bagged their first gold in the aquatic event, winning on men's 1m springboard through world arena debutant Zhang Xinhua.

    Zhang stunned world champion and teammate Luo Yutong for the first gold in the pool for China at the Universiade as the swimming team only won three silver and three bronze medals.

    Table tennis is still the gold mine for China as they had two one-two finishes in both men's and women's singles finals.

    Rao Jingwen came back from behind to beat national teammate Liu Juan for the women's title after the pair were crowned in the women's doubles event on Wednesday.

    Gao Xin beat teammate Hou Yingchao for the men's singles glory, which concluded China's feat of six table tennis titles. There were seven on offer at the Universiade.

    Doha Asiad gold medalist Liu Huanyuan beat judoka Lee Jung Eun of South Korea with an Ippon to take the women's open division.

    The 24-year-old Liu is vying for a berth for women's over 78kg in the Beijing Olympics and she is currently ranked first in the national qualifying rounds.

    China also took the women's team foil gold on Thursday.

    Host Thailand added one more gold to their tally as Danai Udomchoke, seeded number one, pulled off the men's singles tennis title.

    Japan displayed their prowess in judo by winning men's open and women's 48kg as South Korea took the other one up for grab on Thursday.

    Both Russia and Ukraine bagged two titles. Russia won the rhythmic gymnastics group competition while the all-round title went to Ukraine who also took the men's team saber gold.

    Tennis player Alisa Kleybanova snatched Russia's another gold in the women's singles and Czech Republic won the mixed doubles.
