PYONGYANG, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A serious flood has damaged more than 11 percent of farmland and left over 300,000 victims in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the official news agency reported on Thursday.
Heavy rains, which started from Aug. 4, have stormed the DPRK's capital city and six of nine provinces across the country, said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
"In Pyongyang, the water level of the Taedong and Pothong Rivers has hit the highest since 1967," said the KCNA.
By Aug. 14, more than 46,580 houses had been destroyed totally or partially, leaving over 300,000 people victims.
The DPRK claimed that the heavy rains had thrown "a shadow over the prospect of the agricultural production."
Besides, the heavy rains also caused a huge damage to the DPRK's communication systems and industrial infrastructure.
"Some 55,000 square meters of railway roadbeds were washed away and over 400 industrial establishments submerged under water," the KCNA said.
The DPRK has appealed to the international community to provide emergency aid to the country.
