Flood death toll in Bangladesh hits 481

    DHAKA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from flood-related incidents like drowning, waterborne diseases and snakebites in Bangladesh shot up to 481 till Wednesday morning, Health Ministry statistics said.

    Of the victims, 15 died of diarrhea, nine from respiratory problems, 30 from snakebites and 427 from drowning, said officials at the Health Ministry.

    Earlier the Food and Disaster Management Ministry gave different figures with less flood deaths.

    Health Adviser Matiur Rahman said here Tuesday in a joint press conference with Food and Disaster Management Adviser Tapan Chowdhury that they collected the figures from the hospitals across the country. He said their figures are more accurate.

    Since the end of July, Bangladesh has been attacked by the biggest flood in nine years, a total of 39 of 64 districts in the country were hit by flooding, affecting over 10 million people.
