ROME, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti
has been hospitalized with a slight fever in his hometown of Modena, in
northern Italy, and his condition was stable, hospital officials said on
Thursday.
The 71-year-old tenor, who underwent surgery for
pancreatic cancer last year, was hospitalized on Wednesday reportedly suffering
from a slight fever and the first signs of pneumonia.
Pavarotti would remain under observation in the
oncology ward, and the doctors were expected to release him soon, according to a
bulletin from the Modena University Hospital and his manager Terri Robson.
"He remains under observation and his condition is
now stable," Robson said. "It is expected that the doctors will release him from
hospital in the next few days."
Pavarotti had been preparing to leave New York in
July 2006 to resume a farewell tour when doctors discovered a malignant
pancreatic mass, then he underwent surgery in a New York hospital, and all his
remaining 2006 concerts were canceled.
Pavarotti gave his last performance in an opera at
the New York Metropolitan Opera on March 13, 2004.
In February 2006, at the opening ceremony for the
Winter Olympics in Turin, he brought the house down with his trademark Nessun
Dorma aria.
Mantovani, Pavarotti's second wife and former
secretary, said in a newspaper interview last month that her husband was
"fighting like a lion" against his cancer and was reacting well to
radiotherapy.
