DHAKA,
Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The current flood in Bangladesh claimed 36 more lives in last
24 hours raising the death toll to 156 till Monday morning, showing the
incidence of casualty on a steady rise.
Relief ministry officials said nearly that nine
million people have either been displaced or marooned in affected 39 out of 64
districts of the country. Five new sub-districts and a district came under the
grips of flooding.
Meanwhile, thousands of troops are working
round-the-clock along with civil volunteers and medical teams to rescue and
rehabilitate the victims.
Over 300,000 flood-hit victims have so far taken
shelter in 1,412 flood centers in the affected districts.
However, there are reports in local media about the
dearth of relief goods and lack of pure water and medicines for the affected
people.
Agriculture among the affected productive sectors
bears the brunt of the calamity as standing crops on more than 1.4 million acres
(about 567,000 hectares) of land were fully or partially damaged. Small and
cottage industries were also wrecked especially in the towns still under water.
There is still growing apprehension among the people that the flood might turn critical in central Bangladesh in next few days with fresh downpour from a low depression formed over the Bay of Bengal and on-rush of waters from the upper riparian of India and Nepal also facing the natural disaster, according to the local media.
