BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- A man who set himself on fire after crashing an explosive-laden jeep into Glasgow airport died in hospital Thursday, local police confirmed.

Kafeel Ahmed, an engineer with a Ph.D. from Bangalore, was the driver of a Jeep Cherokee sports utility vehicle, packed with gas canisters, which crashed into the front of Glasgow airport, setting the SUV and part of the building ablaze.

"We can confirm that the man seriously injured during the course of the incident at Glasgow airport on Saturday June 30 has died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary,'' a Strathclyde Police spokesman said.

The 27-year-old had been in the hospital for a month and was being kept under armed police guard. He sustained 90 percent burns and had been in a coma throughout his hospital stay.

The other man in the car, Iraqi doctor Bilal Abdullah, had been charged with conspiring to set off explosions.

Kafeel Ahmed's brother, Sabeel Ahmed, 26, had also been charged with withholding information that could prevent an act of terrorism. He was arrested in Liverpool on the day of the Glasgow attack.

Mohamed Haneef, the 27-year-old cousin of the Ahmed brothers, was arrested and charged in Australia over the attacks. But he was released by the Australian authorities at the end of last month.
