NEW DELHI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Though the counting of votes is still in the process, most of the major India media reported on Saturday that India is set to have the first woman President in its 60 years of independence.

The New Delhi Television said that Pratibha Patil, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate who is also supported by the Left Front and other parties, is expected to get more than 600,000 votes in her favor, while her rival, current Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, is estimated to get a little over 350,000 votes in his name.

The Indo-Asian News Service reported that Patil is slated to win with a huge majority.

The counting of votes started at 11 am local time in Parliament House where ballot boxes had been kept after being brought from state capitals and union territories where the members of local assemblies exercised their franchise.

The counting process is likely to be completed within two to three hours, Lok Sabha sources (Lower House) said.

According to P.D.T. Achary, the returning officer for the presidential poll, 88.5 percent voting was registered in parliament where Members of Parliament voted and 91 percent in the State Assemblies.

The new president, who will succeed A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will be sworn in on July 25.
