KATHMANDU, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Tribhuvan University Part-time Teachers' Association has called a Kathmandu Valley general strike for Friday to protest the killing of a teacher by an unidentified gang on July 10, local leading media group's website THT Online reported Thursday.
A meeting of the association on Thursday decided to call a general strike in Kathmandu Valley where capital Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are located.
Condemning the killing, the association also called a total shutdown of academic activities in all Tribhuvan University-affiliated colleges until the guilty was brought to book.
Dharma Raj Bista, a teacher affiliated to Nepal Commerce Campus, was beaten to death by a criminal gang in Kathmandu on July 10.
The association also demanded the government declare Bista a national martyr and provide similar facilities the government provides to national martyrs to Bista's family. The association also demanded permanent job for Bista's wife, free education to his kids and guarantee of long-term security to university teachers.
On Thursday, some students protesting the killing obstructed traffic in some places of Kathmandu and burnt tires on the road. They demanded punishment to the guilty and compensation to the victim's family.
