BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Co-star of "The Simple Life" television show Nicole Richie's trial on charges of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol was delayed on Wednesday until Aug. 16 so an expert defense witness can attend.

;Shawn Chapman Holley, lawyer of Nicole Richie, won the delay at a hearing at Glendale Superior Court in suburban Los Angeles.

Holley said in court that Dr. Terence Sean McGee will testify about tests and conclusions by drug experts used by prosecutors and McGee's testimony is critical to the defense, but he is unavailable to appear in court until next month.

Richie, 25, who could face a jail sentence ranging from four days to one year if convicted, is not required to be present.

Nicole Richie was arrested Dec. 11 and pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.

Richie is the daughter of Rythm & Blues legend Lionel and stars in "The Simple Life" with hotel heiress Paris Hilton, who spent three weeks behind bars last month for violating probation in a drunken driving case.
