WASHINGTON, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish Ambassador to the United States Nabi Sensoy said here Wednesday that U.S.-made weapons are falling into the hands of Kurdish guerillas staging attacks in Turkey.
Sensoy did not suggest that the United States has been supplying the Kurdistan Workers Party (or the PKK) directly. But he accused Kurdish members of the Iraqi government of allowing the Kurdish separatist group to operate in northern Iraq and to stage cross-border attacks in Turkey.
The United States is not doing enough to influence the Kurdish politicians in key positions in the Iraqi government to crack down on the Kurdish rebels, Sensoy told reporters.
The Turkish envoy declined to comment on reports by Iraqi officials that Turkey has amassed 140,000 troops along the border.
Sensoy said Turkish forces are taking normal precautions within Turkish territory of Turkey, but did not rule out a military response to Kurdish rebels.
"I cannot say Turkey would be able to rule out any alternative in the fight against the terrorists," he said.
Both Washington and Ankara consider the PKK a terrorist group with the latter urging Iraq and the United States to crack down on the PKK members based in northern Iraq.
Washington has been trying to persuade Turkey not to resort to a cross-border military operation to crack down on separatist guerrillas in neighboring Iraq.
"We are certainly concerned about the PKK and terrorist organizations," White House spokesman Tony Snow said Monday, referring to the rebel PKK.
"On the other hand it's also important, we think, to recognize the territorial sovereignty of Iraq," he said.
