Special report: Internal situation in Palestine

GAZA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Hamas movement said on Saturday that it welcomed any internal or foreign efforts to narrow gap between the Islamic movement and its rival secular Fatah to secure the resumption of talks.

Fawzi Barhoom, a spokesman for the Islamic Resistance Movement(Hamas), made the remarks after some Palestinian businessmen announced an initiative to resume Hamas-Fatah dialogue.

Barhoom bolstered the idea of direct talks, but insisting initiatives should be presented by both sides during the talks to ensure the most successful solution.

The initiative also calls on Hamas to return the security facilities seized from Fatah by its militants during the infighting in the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian National Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas through the Egyptian mediators. In return, the security apparatus dominated by Fatah should be reshuffled in a way to demonstrate partnership between Fatah and Hamas, according to the initiative.

However, Hamas did not respond clearly at this point, only expressed its welcome to the return of the Egyptian security delegation which used to mediate between the two movements before Hamas' violent takeover of Gaza last month.
