ISLAMABAD, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani government early Thursday morning gave its last warning to the people in Lal Masjid,or Red Mosque, asking them to quit weapons and surrender, the private DAWN NEWS TV channel reported.

The heaviest firing and movement of army and Ranger vehicles within two days started early Thursday morning, but the government law enforcers have still not moved into the mosque, according to DAWN NEWS.

Some 1,200 students have surrendered themselves to the government and small groups of religious students are still going out of the complex.

Lal Masjid chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz was arrested Wednesday night as he tried to escape from the mosque complex in aburqa, officials confirmed.

An earlier announcement from the government said that there would be no talks or compromise with the Lal Masjid management and urged the leaders, militants and students to surrender.

The government confirmed that 16 people were killed and another 98 injured during the clashes, according to a Pakistani newspaper Daily Times.

Lal Masjid students on Tuesday stormed to the street in the capital and triggered cross firing when they tried to snatch arms from security forces.
