BERLIN, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Germany's top court on Tuesday rejected a complaint filed by a German opposition party that could end the deployment of six German Tornado reconnaissance jets sent to Afghanistan earlier this year for NATO mission.

The Karlsruhe-based Federal Constitutional Court said the Tornado mission did not violate NATO's defensive mandate, as the newly-formed opposition Left Party, which seeks an end to all German foreign military deployments, had argued.

The court said in a statement that the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan "serves the security of the Euro-Atlantic region, not only the security of Afghanistan."

The six German Tornado jets were deployed to Afghanistan in April at NATO's request to improve reconnaissance missions against Taliban forces.

Germany now has about 3,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, mainly in the relatively stable northern region. The Afghan mission has met reservations of many Germans who fear it could trigger terrorist attack in Germany.
